The former rector and chancellor of the Vaal University of Technology appeared briefly in the Vanderbijlpark magistrates' court yesterday on charges of fraud and corruption.

Professor Aubrey Tshidiso Mokadi allegedly defrauded the university of about R300000 during his tenure as head of the institution formerly known as the Vaal Triangle Technikon.

He was arrested last May and released on R50 000 bail.

Yesterday the case was postponed to April 19.

Vaal University of Technology spokesman Babini Maneli, speaking after Mokadi's court appearance yesterday, said Mokadi's dismissal followed a report from the commission of inquiry held to investigate claims against him.

"There were allegations levelled against him and they were investigated for some time. Witnesses were called in to testify and the commission resulted in Professor Mokadi being expelled," said Maneli.

"In 1997 Mokadi was dismissed by the school after a disciplinary hearing, but he was reinstated in 2000 by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration, which overruled his dismissal."

Yesterday Mokadi said the commission of inquiry and disciplinary commissions took place in his absence and that he had been unfairly expelled.
