The 2007 edition of the popular MTN Under-16 Soccer Cup will kickoff on April 18.

The tournament is now played under the South African Schools Football Association since the Ussasa was disbanded.

Themba Tshabalala, tournament director, said the deadline for registration is April 11.

"The majority of our high schools have already started registering for the tournament in their respective provinces.

"The tournament has grown, considering that we had 3 000 schools when we started. We are now sitting with 5 001 participating schools.

"We have more than 5 000 high schools playing soccer from the 6 000 that are registered with the department of education. The other schools are those who play cricket and rugby, but we are gradually making inroads into some of them."

The nine provincial winners and runners-up of this tournament qualify for the national playoffs at the end of the year.

Tshabalala said the national playoffs, from September 25 to 29, will be played at Chloorkop, in Gauteng.

l The national playoffs of the Coca-Cola Football Stars are scheduled for Embalenhle in Mpumalanga from September 26 to29.

"It is only the provincial winners that will go to the national play-offs. As for the Mille Cup, the tournament will also start on April 18."

The Mille Cup playoffs takes place in Umlazi from September 21 to 24.
