Top 8 dream is fading: Santos

Thami Nqolobe

If Santos cherish any hopes of taking part in the lucrative top eight competition, they must start winning their Castle Premiership league games, especially at home.

The warning came from coach Roger de Sa after his side drew 1-1 with Golden Arrows in Cape Town on Friday evening.

"Tonight [Friday] our performance was not up to standard and I have told the guys that if we do not improve, we should forget about top eight. They promise not to let their followers down by not winning games and commit themselves to taking part in the top eight competition at the end of the season," said a dejected De Sa.

His arrows counterpart, Manqoba Mngqithi, was satisfied with the result but still felt that his charges should have won the game as they had Santos at their mercy but failed to punish them.

"We played well tonight, but we let Santos off the hook, especially in the first half," said Mngqithi.

In the early stages of the game, the home side took the game to their opponents but faded as Arrows came back strongly.

Richard Henyekane put Arrows in the lead in the 22nd minute when his shot hit the back of the net following a pass by teammate Thanduyise Khuboni.

Santos levelled matters in the second half from a goal by Eleazar Rodgers, who pouncing on a back pass in the 48th minute.
