Thousands of music lovers flocked to the Barberton Medium B Prison on Saturday to enjoy Ligwalagwala FM's 25th birthday celebrations.

The radio station's listeners heeded the call and arrived in droves to converge en masse for the celebrations.

"I have lived and worked in the mines of this town for many decades, but I have never seen such a huge crowd of people visiting us.

"The Pride of The Nation [Ligwalagwala FM] should have realised that it has a massive support from its listeners and rather have arranged a better venue that would accommodate all," said 67-year-old Albert Magagula, a pensioner from the nearby Mjindini Trust.

People's poet Mzwake Mbuli, gospel diva Rebecca Malope and other musos such as Tuks, Mr Selwyn, Prokid, Malik Shanna, Malini, Magarimbe, Slice, Magesh, Gwyza, Flabba, Sgonondo, and Pantsula graced the function and sent fans into raptures when they took to the stage. Mwakhe in particular was energetic and gave an impressive performance.

Rio Mabunda, the station manager, said the function had been a huge success and had shown the popularity of the station.

"If one looks at the high attendance figures, there is no doubt that the station has a huge number of supporters," Mabunda said.
