A moment of madness by Namibian international Sydney Plaatjies cost Jomo Cosmos dearly on Saturday afternoon.
Plaatjies reduced Ezenkosi to 10 men after elbowing Silver Stars' Willem Jackson in an off-the- ball incident which saw his team fall apart and eventually succumb 3-1 in a Castle Premiership encounter in the scorching heat of the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace.
The Tycoons were aggressive from the first whistle and took the game to the visitors at pace . It was one such early attack that led to Joel Luphahla colliding with Cosmos' goalkeeper Zico Shiningayamwe. He was taken to hospital after about five minutes of medical attention wasn't enough to see him back in the game.
He was replaced by Koketso Mmotong in the 10th minute. At this stage Cosmos were holding their own and launching sporadic attempts at Tapuwa Kapini's goal. It was on the counter that Bhamuza Sono had his father on his feet as he unleashed a scorcher that flew just inches wide in the 26th minute. By then Stars had hit the upright from a Edward Williams free kick on 15 minutes.
Dale Studzinski, who was a thorn in the side of the Ezenkosi defence, stole the ball from Morgan Gould in the 28th minute and his shot evaded Shiningayamwe's outstretched hand to nestle in the far corner. That was the only goal of the first half.
The second half saw Cosmos coming back with Reneilwe Letsholonyane in the place of Davies Mwape and the lively midfielder instantly made his presence felt.
The game was now fairly even, though the speed that Stars had in Mmotong and Dingaan Masanabo clearly caused discomfort for Gould and Mokete Tsotetsi at the back for Cosmos. And, as if things were not bad enough, Cosmos won a free kick and as he prepared to take it, Plaatjies elbowed Jackson and was sent off by referee Ace Ncobo.
After that, Cosmos fell apart and Masanabo took advantage of the numerical supremacy to punish Cosmos further by beating the offside trap and slotting over the advancing keeper to make it 2-0.
Much as Cosmos wanted to make a game of it, Stars were full value for their win and it came as no surprise when Mmotong added his name to the tally to make it 3-0. Dikgang Mabalane reduced the deficit to 3-1 when he scored a consolation goal in the 87th minute
