The future of Differ Mogale, pictured, Mbombela municipality's 2010 World Cup co-ordinator, remains in limbo despite a decision by the ANC's Mpumalanga leadership that he be reinstated.
The municipality has twice dismissed Mogale in the past six months on the grounds that his appointment was irregular.
The ANC provincial executive committee intervened and called for Mogale's reinstatement.
The committee's decision was confirmed by President Thabo Mbeki at the weekend during his two-day visit to Mpumalanga.
"I have been briefed about some problems in the Mbombela municipality and it was noted that some of the decisions taken by the municipality were unfortunate and are going to be reversed," said Mbeki.
But municipal chief whip Mfana Nkosi this week denied any knowledge of such a decision.
"The situation in Mbombela remains the same as far as the council's decision to revoke Mogale's appointment is concerned," Nkosi said.
lSowetan wrongly reported on Monday that Mbeki had ordered Mogale's reinstatement. It was, in fact, the provincial executive committee of the ANC that decided Mogale should be reinstated. In his media address on Sunday Mbeki was referring to that decision.
