HIV-Aids insurance change long overdue

We wish to hail the decision of the Life Offices' Associa- tion to scrap the draconian clause that prevented the dependents of people who died of HIV-Aids-related diseases from benefitting from the insurance of the deceased.

We wish to hail the decision of the Life Offices' Associa- tion to scrap the draconian clause that prevented the dependents of people who died of HIV-Aids-related diseases from benefitting from the insurance of the deceased.

This decision is long overdue and we welcome the fact that the insurance industry has conceded that it is no longer sustainable to continue discriminating against people who are infected or affected by the HIV-Aids scourge.

As a party that is deeply entrenched in rural areas, we have witnessed the pain and anger of relatives who were denied insurance payouts because their family member was HIV-positive.

These unfortunate occurrences led to poor families becoming poorer after they had buried their loved ones.

It is our view that this decision should be applied retrospectively because it would help all those families that have been wronged.

Many people have become impoverished as a result of the cost of burying their loves ones when it was, in fact, the insurance company's obligation to do so.

If this is done it will relieve many families of the burden that they find themselves having to carry.
