Mary J Blige is coming to South Africa.

The queen of hip-hop, soul and R&B, will set Johannesburg's Coca-Cola Dome alight on May 12 before heading for Durban's Westridge Park Stadium the next day and will sign-off at the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town on May 16.

A musical duck transformed into a swan, Blige evokes varied comments.

She is often said to lack a powerful voice but has been compared to Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan.

Since her dramatic entrance into showbiz with What's the 411?, she has held the industry spellbound, becoming one of the greatest stars in the US today.

A sizzling stage performer, who is described in her biography as having succeeded in blending her style to the edgy power of hip-hop with the resonance of classic soul.

The six-time Grammy Award winning singer, songwriter, producer, and actress who has sold more than 34million records worldwide, has just completed a season sweep of the "big three" major music awards.

She won the American Music Award in November 2006, the Billboard Music Awards in December 2006, and the Grammy Awards in February 2007 for her album, The Breakthrough.
