Giant German car manufacturing company Mercedes-Benz is lending a hand to help South Africa to prepare for the 2010 World Cup.

The company is providing ongoing financial support to Grassroot Soccer, a South African organisation that is a member of the global street football network.

In addition, the company has donated two Sprinter vans, which will be used to transport budding soccer players in Cape Town and Tshwane.

They will be used to ferry children to football games and other outreach events that form part of the "Go for Goals" campaign, which was initiated by Mercedes-Benz.

Tobias Reich, director of the company, said: "Team sports like street football have great potential to bring about positive social change in the lives of young players and give them a better start in life.

"By taking part in sport, young people learn about competition, team spirit and how to channel aggression.

"Grassroot Soccer uses its street football projects as a tool to raise HIV-Aids awareness. These are all goals that we want to support. In Grassroot Soccer, we have found a partner with the expertise and experience to make these goals reality."
