Women wishing to capitalise on business opportunities arising from the 2010 Soccer World Cup should focus their attention beyond the event.

This was the message to the first Sowetan Women's Club forum this year, held at Meropa Casino in Polokwane, Limpopo, on Friday.

Carol Nkambule of the social and economic development department said: "Look at the bigger picture and focus on developments in the province with a plan of action for after 2010."

Limpopo's director-general Nelly Manzini and Old Mutual's marketing and promotions manager Thandi Mosupye were the other guest speakers.

Muvhango actress Florence Masebe hosted the event.

The theme was "Prosper in Polokwane" and the evening highlighted business opportunities in Limpopo and province's diverse resources.

Nkambule said transport, housing, construction, import, export, jewellery making, mining and textile industries were not fully exploited by women.

She urged women to take advantage of Limpopo's proximity to the rest of South Africa and other countries to expand their businesses.

Manzini warned against "myopic thinking" that limited innovation and success.

"We can learn from others' success, but it is important to take risks and not do what every one else is doing."

She said women must acquire construction skills.

Mosupye shared the five secrets of financial success which are inspired by South Africa's Big Five animals.

A fashion show by local designer Tumi Hlabyago left guests gasping. Afro-pop star Lira completed an informative and entertaining night.
