Woman shot dead in front of children

Two Melmoth sisters watched helplessly as their mother was shot dead allegedly by her former boyfriend at the weekend.

The sisters and their mother Babhekile Dlakude, 31, were on their way to fetch water from the Ebhudlweni River, at Entembeni, when they were confronted by Dlakude's former boyfriend who allegedly opened fire on her.

Dlakude tried to run away but he chased her and allegedly shot her four times. She died at the scene.

Police spokesman Jay Naicker said the suspect had been arrested. "A 9mm pistol was recovered in the suspect's possession as well as 37 rounds of ammunition."

The victim had broken off her relationship with the suspect and was preparing to marry her new boyfriend. - Sne Masuku
