A bank teller in Mpumalanga briefly appeared before a local magistrates' court on Friday on charges of theft.

A bank client had made a deposit of R5000 with the teller, who changed the amount to R1000 instead.

Tshepo Baloyi, 25, of Soshanguve in Pretoria, is a teller at the Thulamahashe branch of Absa Bank. He was not asked to plead and was released on a warning pending his next court appearance at the beginning of next month.

"A client alleged that he deposited R5000 in a relative's bank account but later established that only R1000 reflected in the relative's bank account, leaving R4000 unaccounted for.

"Further investigations led to the arrest of the bank teller," said Mhala police spokesman Inspector Robert Makhubele.

He said the police, together with the bank, were investigating if the incident was the first at the bank or whether it had happened to other unsuspecting clients before.
