talks deadlocked

Wage talks between the Public Service De-partment and Cosatu-aligned unions have deadlocked, the union federation said last week. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) was demanding a 12percent wage increase, and the department was offering between 4 and 5,3percent, said Cosatu spokesman Patrick Craven. A faci-litator will be called in to bring the parties together for a second round of talks. A dispute will be declared if the state fails to make a better offer. - Sapa
