l In October Isaac Dliway, an illegal miner from Zimbabwe, fell into a 120m-deep shaft when the rope supporting him broke.

l He sustained serious head injuries. The search for him was called off after almost a month because it was too expensive to continue. His body was later retrieved.

l In January five illegal miners were trapped in a mine when rocks fell on them. The search for them was called off when the rocks started falling again. Last month their relatives used picks and spades to recover their bodies.

l On March 7, 11 more illegal miners went into the same mine of death. Four were killed after inhaling smoke. One is still in a critical condition in hospital. Six others were arrested for trespassing and are scheduled to appear in court soon.
