MPO spokesman Bertus de Jongh said that the shortage resulted from price signals relayed to producers two years ago.
"The sharp in-crease in maize and feed costs combined and low producer prices forced producers to reduce production in order to survive financially," he said, adding that as a result, not enough milk was produced to meet consumer demand.
Importing dairy products was not an alternative "because the weakening rand makes it too expensive to do so". - Sapa
