Members of a community of disabled people in Itsoseng Township near Lichtenburg in North West are unsure of their future.

This is because they were told their that two-roomed houses were to be converted into student hostels.

Gert Kgopetsi, the manager of Handicraft Centre, an institution for the disabled managed by the Department of Social Development, allegedly informed 48 families that the department needed their houses to accommodate students.

Motlagomang Tsagae, 70, has lived in her two-roomed house for 26 years.

"I am against the idea of sharing my yard with a total stranger," said Tsagae.

In a recent meeting organised by George Ntewana, chairman of the Itsoseng Disability Association, it was suggested that the disabled be granted four-roomed houses in the same yard as the two-roomed houses.

The land belongs to public works, but a spokesman yesterday denied this.

"We have allocated those houses to the Social Development Department for their use," said Lesiba Kgwele, a spokesman for the Department of Public Works in North West.
