The South African softball national championships move into top gear today with the battle to qualify for the semifinals intensifying.
The yearly tournament, where the cream of South African softball is on display, takes place at the Polokwane cricket club.
It started on Monday with all Softball South Africa (SSA) provincial and student national men's and women's teams taking part.
At the time of going to press yesterday, Gauteng North and KwaZulu-Natal were still leading the pack in the Major women's section with 10 points each.
Hard on their heels were Western Province on eight points, with Central Gauteng and Eastern Gauteng third on three points each.
Moving to the Major men's category, Central Gauteng had pocketed 13 points, followed by KwaZulu-Natal on 12 points.
The hosts, Limpopo, and Western Province were third on 11 points each.
Guillo "S'dumo" Marapyane, SSA president, said: "So far so good, people are being treated to world-class softball here in Limpopo.
"We will be announcing three national teams at the end of the tournament to represent South Africa at various competitions.
"There will be a senior team for women to take part in the Zone Six Championships in Lusaka (Zambia in May and the Beijing Olympics qualifiers in Italy in July.
"We will also name a senior men's team to Lusaka. The third team will be for the girls' Under-19s going to Holland for the Junior World Championships in June."
Some of the national team players in action include Moses Molaba, Tebogo Ramokgoadi, Thabang Letsoalo (Limpopo), Gareth Scott (KZ-N), Greg Barret (Central Gauteng) and Gert van der Walt (Western Province) and Eastern Gauteng's Tyrone Young.
The Major women's final pitches off at 1pm tomorrow and the men's final starts at 4pm.
