l Those aspiring to become police officers must be over 18, have a valid driver's licence, be physically fit, be punctual, have no criminal record and be prepared to respect the community and authorities.
l During the first year of training, trainees earn between R1600 and R2500 a month. This increases to R3850 during the second year of training. Once sworn in as a member of the SAPS, officers earn around R4600 a month.
l While police officers are considered underpaid, there are opportunities to move up the ranks or specialise. There is demand for profilers, forensics analysts, crime scene investigators, intelligence specialists and VIP protection.
l Themba said: "Being a police officer can prove to be a successful career choice. A senior superintendent can earn around R400000 a year, a director around R500000 a year, and a commissioner just over R600000."
