A 16-year-old grade 10 schoolgirl appeared in the Johannesburg magistrates' court on Friday after being arrested for allegedly killing her father.

The Coronationville High School pupil is alleged to have set on fire a backroom in which her father was sleeping. He burnt to death in the room at their Westbury, Johannesburg, home.

The girl was released into the custody of her mother and relatives. She will return to court on a date still to be set by the Johannesburg chief prosecutor.

The man, 42, of 1297 Fox Glove Court, died at the Helen Joseph Hospital from third-degree burn wounds to his upper body after the incident on Tuesday.
