The Eastern Cape Education Department has set aside R6,7 million to ensure safety and fight crime in schools.

MEC Johnny Makgato said last Friday during his budget and policy speech in Bhisho that the high prevalence of violence in schools manifests itself in substance abuse, rape, assault, vandalism and theft.

This has prompted the department to resuscitate the School Safety Programme in partnership with the Department of Safety and Security.

"This programme is being piloted in three local municipalities," the MEC said.

It will be initiated in 30 schools.

Makgato is determined to instill discipline among pupils, but said his department cannot win the battle against crime alone.

He called on all stakeholders to collaborate with the department to restore the moral fibre of society.
