Current IBO featherweight and former IBO world junior featherweight champion Thomas "Merciless" Mashaba has joined Golden Gloves Promotions.
Mashaba had his last three fights, when he defended his IBO belt, under World Sport Promotions. He would not shed any light on why he left Thinus Strydom's stable. But sources close to the locomotive train driver at Driefontein mine said Mashaba complained of being constantly paid a meagre purse.
He is not a newcomer at Golden Gloves. He appeared in their tournament at the Sun City Superbowl on April 24 2004 when he defended his South African junior featherweight title against Springkaan Khongoane.
Promoter Rodney Berman said Mashaba's trainer Eugene Khanyile approached him to guide the career of his charge.
"It's never easy for someone to say they made a mistake, but in this instance I can honestly say that it was a major mistake on our part to ever let Thomas go when we did", said Berman.
He said they steered Mashaba to the IBO junior featherweight crown when they had a glut of top fighters and not enough tournaments to keep them busy.
"As a result, we couldn't adequately service his needs, and rather than see him idling, we advised him and Khanyile to seek a reasonable deal elsewhere. I have agreed to promote Mashaba again because we now now have Emperors Palace on our side."
