Top sports administrator Leonard Chuene has been given a mammoth task of leading the Confederation of African Athletics in the southern African region.

Chuene was elected president of the region at its yearly general meeting in Tshwane last Wednesday. But he had to be persuaded by athletics leaders in the region.

"I was reluctant because I have too many hats, but I had no choice when so many people were pleading with me to stand for the presidency," Chuene said.

"After a thorough consultation, I decided to stand for elections and I would like to thank all the people for showing confidence in my leadership."

He said southern Africa is one of the strongest regions of the African Confederation of Athletics where activities are organised regularly.

"We need to step up our efforts in this regard."

Swaziland's Patrick Howe was elected treasurer. Meanwhile, Chuene has congratulated 800m champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi for being chosen as the best male runner in the country.
