Thomas Maloba, a well-known teacher in Seshego township, near Polokwane, died this week after a short illness.
He was 61.
Maloba worked at the several schools in the province.
He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971 from the University of Fort Hare.
At the University of Limpopo - then the University of the North - he studied education.
He obtained a masters degree in education from the University of New Jersey in the US in 1981.
He taught at Mohlakaneng Secondary School from 1973 to 1978. In 1978 he was appointed principal of Setlakalane High School, in GaMolepo, east of Polokwane.
Between 1991 and 1995, Maloba was the principal of Hwiti Secondary School in Mankweng, near Turfloop.
He was appointed an inspector of schools in 1995 and worked in that position until he was forced to retire because of ill health.
In his career as an inspector, Maloba worked in the circuits of Bakenburg, Mankweng and Bochum (Senwabarwana).
His son, Lesiba, described his father's death as a blow to the family and to the education fraternity as a whole.
"He first became ill in 2005, but we could not determine exactly what the problem was," said Lesiba.
"He was a strong man, committed to the advancement of education and to his family.
"He was a supportive figure, particularly on matters of education."
Maloba will be buried tomorrow at the Polokwane Cemetery in Silicon.
The prayer service is scheduled to start at his house at 1904 Zone 1, Seshego.
A full funeral service will take place at the Pietersburg Wrestling Club.
Maloba is survived by his wife, Dikeledi, two sons, two daughters, four grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters.
