A former spokesman for the Limpopo Department of Roads and Transport, Phuti Mabelebele, is in hot water after allegations that she has misappropriated money.

The department says that Mabelebele has failed to account for at least R1,5 million of its money.

Mabelebele was yesterday suspended from her duties after the discovery of piles of promotional gifts in her office.

She allegedly duped the department into believing that she had distributed the items instead of keeping them for herself.

Obed Langa, the new spokesman for the department, confirmed yesterday that Mabelebele had been charged with misconduct and suspended after the discovery.

He said a huge stock of items ranging from T-shirts, caps, diaries, pens and other materials had been found in Mabelebele's office.

Her suspension brings to five the number of senior officials in the department who have been suspended for misconduct.

On February 14 the department suspended four officials for fraud and corruption.

They are Walter Sathekge, general manager for roads and traffic, Frans Kadiaka, an administration clerk working with abnormal loads, his manager, Johannes Mothiba, and Phineas Maponya, who ran the provincial module of the national traffic information system. The four were suspended on full pay.

"We want to make it clear that we are not going to tolerate any form of corruption in our department," said Langa.

He said the allegations against the suspended officials were regarded as serious.

"We will stop at nothing to make sure that anyone who is found guilty will face the full might of the law," he said.
