The four-year-old child whose body was discovered by fishermen on Monday has been identified after Sowetan reported the discovery.

The body of Thato Mayile of Powerline settlement in Acornhoek, Mpumalanga, was found by two fishermen floating in a dam near Tsakane village, about 8km from his home, on Monday afternoon.

They alerted the Acornhoek police who took the body to the local mortuary and asked Sowetan to help trace the unidentified boy's family.

Police spokesman, Zanele Sibuyi, said yesterday: "We are thankful to your newspaper because after the story was published on Wednesday members of the community who read or heard the news and knew about the disappearance of a boy told his parents.

"When they arrived here, they positively identified him," she said.

Thato's mother, Suzan Mohlala, told police the boy had disappeared from home on March 5 after she had left him with her sister, Portia.

Sibuyi said: "The woman's own mother had died and she left the boy behind when she went to borrow money to help with funeral arrangements.

"We have since established that the boy followed his mother without her noticing it," How the boy drowned is not yet known.
