The MEC of public safety, security and liaison in the Free State, Playfair Morule, said in his budget speech yesterday that crime in the Free State had decreased by 8percent.
The department's budget for this fiscal year amounted to R34,8million, he said, and it would be used mainly in the fight against crime, particularly ahead of the 2010 World Cup.
Morule said the budget emphasised the process of mass mobilisation. He said the community police forums (CPFs) would be revamped to not only serve as links between the public and the police, but also to prioritise categories of crime to be tackled in different areas.
"We need to work hand in hand with the communities to combat crime," Morule said.
At the provincial community mobilisation conference last month the effectiveness of CPFs and municipal structures was discussed and it was agreed that responsibilities be shared by all parties involved, including members of affected communities.
It was also agreed to measure the effectiveness of progress on crime reduction strategies, particularly concerning contact crimes such as rape, murder, attempted murder and assault.
