Wayward Orlando Pirates midfielder Gift Leremi yesterday appeared in the Randburg magistrates' court charged with common assault.

Leremi, 23, is alleged to have attacked Ephraim Memeza at a petrol filling station in Sandton, Johannesburg, in December.

Leremi sat on a bench outside the courtroom reading a copy of Sowetan.

He was flanked by his father and uncle who were there to support him. Hugs were exchanged by father and son after the case.

Some of his friends were also there to support him.

This was Leremi's second appearance. He once before ignored a summons to appear in court.

During the proceedings, which lasted a mere five minutes, the state said it had two witnesses that it was going to bring to the witness box.

Leremi's lawyer, David Moerane, asked the court to instruct the state to make sure the two witnesses were available on May 2 when the trial starts.
