Hope for embattled school

There is a glimmer of hope that classes could resume at the embattled Qantayi Secondary School in Port Dunford near Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal.

Yesterday, the school governing body said 15 of the 23 teachers, who had initially submitted letters requesting to be transferred, had withdrawn their requests.

Teachers and the principal fled the school two weeks ago when pupils, complaining about the principal's decision to cancel a sporting excursion, went on a rampage damaging classrooms and cars and assaulting teachers.

Clement Mngomezulu, chairman of the school governing body said the teachers claimed they had been forced to write the letters.

A spokesman for the education department said MEC Ina Cronje would meet all parties involved in the matter soon.
