The ANC and its youth league in Limpopo yesterday rallied behind Norman Mashabane, right, and said his appointment to the legislature was a true reflection of his capability to lead and serve his people.
The reactions follow Mashabane's appointment to the legislature was criticised by opposition parties who said he did not have good moral grounds to stand in the public arena.
Cassel Mathale, ANC provincial secretary, yesterday told Sowetan there was nothing wrong with Mashabane's appointment and that he, like any other South African citizen, should enjoy all the benefits.
"Those rights include the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law, if there is any case to answer before the courts. Mashabane has never been to court nor found guilty of any irregularity.
"It is on these grounds that we are supporting his appointment and will also support him in his cause to fight poverty and underdevelopment," Mathale said.
The ANC Youth League in the province also came out in support.
"Mashabane was the first on the ANC list and there was absolutely no reason to exclude him.
"He has never been found guilty of any wrong doing," provincial secretary Julius Malema said.
Yesterday, Mashabane denied he was a "sex pest".
"I am being compromised after I exposed car scam corruption that was taking place in the South African embassy in Indonesia.
"This is obviously a political ploy to discredit me," Mashabane said, adding he would carry on the fight until the truth came out.
"I have said previously and will say again that I am committed to the fight against woman and child abuse," Mashabane said.
At the time charges came up, Mashabane was the country's ambassador to Indonesia.
He recently quit as Premier Sello Moloto's special advisor to clear his name and ensure that the integrity of the office of the premier remains intact.
