Looking for an MPV with a price tag of less than R200000? Look no further than Mazda.

The new Mazda5 was launched in Cape Town last week with a starting price of only R199990.

This pricing was achieved after extensive research by the manufacturer.

It comes in two specification levels, the Active and Individual models. Individual offers sport packs. Both models are powered by the 2,0litre engine found in the Mazda3.

The Mazda5 comes standard with some of the highest vehicle-control technologies such as a four-wheel antilock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution, emergency brake assist and dynamic stability control with traction control.

This Mazda consists of driver and passenger, side and curtain airbags for all three seating rows.

The Mazda5 joins an already tight market, but its manufacturers believe their vehicle is good value for money.

Doreen Mashinini, marketing manager Mazda South Africa, said: "This is Mazda's latest generation MPV, developed and engineered to capture a segment we have never catered in South Africa, while still embodying the company's spirited DNA and continuing the excitement of the joy of motion zoom-zoom."

The 2,0litre, 16-valve engine produces a peak power of 107kW at 6000rpm and maximum torque of 185Nm at 4 500rpm.

Competition is surely going to be tough regardless of the price because buyers are still blinded by the Toyota badge.

The Mazda5 range comes equipped with power remote door mirrors, power door locks and windows and remote keyless entry. Manual air-conditioning with pollen filters are available in the Active model and the Individual model includes automatic air-conditioning with an ambient temperature display.

From the exterior, the Mazda5 is distinguished by 17-inch alloy wheels, body-colour bumpers, side mouldings, mirrors and door handles.

The Individual model is set apart, thanks to the addition of a Sports Appearance Package. This includes a body-colour front sports bumper, sports grill, side and rear under-skirts and roof spoiler.

The Mazda5 is fighting for a stake in a market dominated by the likes of Honda and Corolla.

The Mazda5 2,0litre Individual model Multi Purpose Vehicle is priced at R216 990.
