A father of two allegedly shot and killed his estranged wife in full view of onlookers at a popular Dullstroom trout shop at the weekend.

The woman, 38, who worked at Milly's Trout Store in the quaint resort town in Mpumalanga, died after she was shot twice on Sunday afternoon, allegedly by the 44-year-old father of their two school-going children.

The couple was in the process of a divorce and were no longer staying together at the time of the shooting incident, police said.

Captain Klaas Maloka of the highveld area police at KwaMhlanga said the deceased was shot twice in the chest.

Dullstroom police station commissioner Captain Mary-Jane Mazibuko said the couple allegedly became involved in a quarrel at about 3pm.

There were no other people inside the shop at the time.

"It appears shots were first fired inside the store and the deceased managed to escape through the window with the suspect following her.

"Outside the store, in full view of onlookers, he allegedly shot at her. She died instantly," Mazibuko said.

Police said the suspect then fled the scene. Police went to look for him on a farm where he was staying, but could not find him.

He was traced to the Lydenburg Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for a bullet wound in the chest.

According to sources, the man claimed to have been wounded by the deceased.

Mazibuko said the murder weapon was later found at the home of the suspect's brother in Lydenburg.

The man is in hospital under police guard.
