Mpumalanga police have asked for help in identifying an elderly woman whose body was found in bushes last Thursday in an early state of decomposition.
Next to the body were used and unused condoms.
A man had gone to relieve himself in the bushes at Mooiset Trust near Acornhoek when he was overwhelmed by a stench that he mistook for that of a dead dog.
When he went to investigate, he found the body.
He called the Acornhoek police who discovered several items next to the body, including condoms and empty bottles.
Constable Zanele Sibuyi, a spokesman for the Acornhoek police, yesterday said: "We found two used condoms, two unused condoms, an empty 750ml beer bottle, an empty 340ml wine bottle, an empty 450ml beer bottle, an empty litre cold drink bottle and toilet paper."
She said the police's fingerprint experts took the items found on the scene, and the used condoms had been sent to a laboratory for forensic testing.
"We hope to nab the suspect through DNA tests as well as his fingerprints from the bottles found t the scene," said Sibuyi.
Police suspect the woman was raped before being murdered.
A postmortem would be conducted this week to establish the exact cause of the woman's death.
The body was taken to Elite Mortuary in Acornhoek and police have asked anyone who might know either the identity of the woman or the suspected killer or rapist to contact the station on 013-795-8013/4 or call Detective Inspector Tebogo Mashego on 073-741-4803.
"People should feel free to call the contact numbers. Their information will be in strict confidentiality," said Sibuyi.
