Poor attendance at a tournament at the Kagiso Community Hall on Sunday did not worry promoter Xoli Gumede.

Instead, the former South African lightweight champion from Meadowlands is satisfied to have staged a professional boxing tournament in the area after a long time.

Gumede said the more boxing bouts were staged in such areas, the better the attendance will be.

"I can only hope that the Gauteng department of sports and recreation will hear our pleas for our next assignment to the Vaal.

"Without the Gauteng sports department, out tournament on Sunday would not have happened," he said.

Gumede, who reigned as the South African champion for nine months before being dethroned by Aladin Stevens on July 30 1990, is sure that those people who attended got their money's worth.

The main bout pitted Johannes Pietersen from Toekomsrus against Farai Masiyiwa from Zimbabwe over eight rounds in the junior middleweight division. Masiyiwa won on points. In another fight, Danile Botman beat Amos Nhlapho on points.
