The impasse over the awarding of the licence for operating the national lottery puts a question mark over the timing of the selection process.
Launching the process only a year before the new operator was due to take over wa s ill-advised. The dispute over the government's decision to award the licence highlights the folly of the timing, given that the new operator was announced nearly a year before the new contract period begins, on April 1.
To avoid delays in future, the minister should take into account the possibility of a dispute and allow sufficient time for its resolution.
As it is now, with April 1 only two weeks away, trade and industry minister Mandisi Mpahlwa has little time to come up with a new solution acceptable to all the bidders.
