Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
The National Youth Commission and Umsobomvu Youth Fund must be scrapped because they have failed dismally to deliver.
Since being established in 1996, the youth commission (NYC) has only succeeded in creating business opportunities for a few of its commissioners and cronies.
When it appeared before a review committee, headed by Kader Asmal recently, NYC leaders were not convincing when asked why the commission should continue to exist.
The director of research and policy contradicted the chairman, and the director of finance was actively involved in a showdown with provincial chairmen.
The NYC's main function is to formulate policy and consolidate youth development. It is true that on its own the NYC cannot bring about change for poor and disillusioned young people. But it wields immense power to lobby other state organs, departments and provinces in pursuit of youth development and empowerment.
The expanded public works programme, moral regeneration and free education campaigns and the National Aids Council should be led by a competent NYC and not seniors. The youth must lead their struggle and not be captained by seniors who can barely stay awake in crucial meetings.
