The 13th South African Music Awards nominees were announced yesterday at a glittering function at the Design Quarter in Fourways, Johannesburg.

The event saw Simphiwe Dana, Siphokazi Maregana, Mafikizolo and Bheki Khoza walk away with four nominations each.

A lot of young artists really shone. Maduvha Madima, for example, got three nominations.

In the album of the year category Vusi Mahlasela is competing with Bheki Khoza, Siphokazi, DJ Sbu and Simphiwe Dana.

Another competition is happening between the two maskandi arch-rivals Bhekumuzi Luthuli and Thokozani Langa. They are contending with Soul Brothers in the best mbaqanga category.

In the maskandi category Imithente has made history by becoming the first all- female group to be nominated. They are up against Ikhansela No JBC, Shwi Nomtekhala, Ovezuthando and Izinsimbi.

As usual, in the best African contemporary gospel album, Rebecca Malope's name was called. She is contesting Avante, Vicky, S'nethemba, Hlengiwe Mhlaba.

In the best kwaito album Kabelo Mabalane is up against Thebe, Sgonondo, L'Vovo and Trompies.
