Builders of a hospital in North West have been criticised by the health MEC for their shoddy work.
Nomonde Rasmeni visited Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdorp on Wednesday after it was devastated by violent storms at the weekend.
Millions of rands of damage was caused when the hospital's roof was blown away on Sunday. Further damage was caused to the nurses' home and staff residences.
Rasmeni said the hospital building had become unsuitable because its builders did not do a thorough job.
"There is no drainage in this place and that is why the hospital is easily flooded.
"We want to build a new hospital for this area that will be good for our people," Rasmeni said.
It is the second time in six months that the hospital has been damaged by heavy rains.
In November floods caused extensive damage to the laboratory, pharmacy and X-ray department which cost the department R20million to renovate.
After accessing the damage at Tshepong, Rasmeni visited Nic Bodenstein Hospital at Makwassie. The hospital has been plagued by complaints relating to patient neglect by staff, lack of proper healthcare and the general poor condition of the hospital.
Acting chief executive Mathabeng Mokoto said the problems were caused by the exodus of nurses to more lucrative posts .
"We have vacant posts for 10 nurses, five doctors and we still need more pharmacists. The burning issue is that our health professionals were not paid rural skills allowances, but I hope the MEC will deal with that," she said.
