North West takes aim at poverty

Maureen Modiselle, the finance MEC for North West, this week tabled a provincial budget that she said would help to deal with poverty in the province.

Speaking to the legislature on Tuesday while tabling her R14,4billion budget, Modiselle said the province's greatest challenge was poverty.

"We need to expand our Provincial Growth and Development Strategy to also take into account the millennium development goals," she said.

She said chief among the millennium development goals were the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger.

"Despite the fact that South Africa is a net exporter of food, there is hunger and malnutrition in our province. We cannot become complacent on this issue, especially in light of rises in food prices in the past year," she said. - Boitumelo Tshehle
