'He must stay in jail for his sin'

Angry residents expressed their appreciation of the justice system on Monday when a man accused of raping his 12-year-old stepdaughter was ordered to be detained.

The man, 45, of Avoca township, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, appeared briefly in the Dundee magistrates' court.

Last week members of the community asked the court not to grant him bail because they feared for the safety of their children if he were released.

The man's stepdaughter told her mother that she had been raped repeatedly by her stepfather since last year and that he had threatened to kill her if she told anyone.

A concerned resident said: "How can he rape a child, let alone his child? We've never heard of such a thing before. We hope that justice will take its course and keep him in jail for his sin." - Mhlaba Memela
