The leadership of the Businesswomen's Association (BWA) has received a burst of new blood in the form of beauty queen turned businesswoman Basetsana Khumalo and well-known businesswoman Angie Makwetla.
Khumalo joins the association in April as its president, while Makwetla is the incoming executive head.
The BWA was formed in 2000 when three women's organisations merged to form an association which today boasts a membership of about 2700 businesswomen.
Makwetla is chairperson of Makwetla & Associates, a public relations and community development company which runs Sowetan's Nation Building projects. She is credited with starting the first black-owned computer training academy in South Africa in 1988. Her work was recognised in 2001 when she was awarded the "Women of Strategy Award" for her efforts to develop a better community.
Khumalo was propelled into the limelight when she was crowned Miss South Africa in 1994 and later graced television screens as a presenter on the magazine programme Top Billing. She then teamed up with business partner Patience Stevens and started Tswelopele Productions, a JSE listed television broadcasting company.
Namane Magau, the BWA's outgoing president said: "We are excited about Basetsana and Angie coming on board. Both of them have a passion not only for business, but also for empowering others. With them at the helm, BWA will be well-positioned to contribute optimally to the empowerment of women in South Africa."
