The coffers of the embattled King Sabata Dalindyebo municipality in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, have been boosted by an injection of R49million by the government.
The good news was delivered by the Eastern Cape's MEC for local government, Sam Kwelita, at a council sitting last week.
Kwelita was cheered by councillors and people in the public gallery when he announced that the national treasury had made R49million available to resuscitate the ailing municipality.
As a cherry on top of the cake, the caretaker municipal manager, Vuyo Zitumane, announced that the Department of Finance would also transfer R87 million to the municipality for its programmes.
The total R136 million windfall would help to augment the municipal budget to be tabled in July.
Barely three months in the hot seat, Zitumane managed to sweet talk the provincial Department of Health to pay R2,5million owed to the municipality for rates.
Both Kwelita and the municipal mayor, De La Rey Mkatshwa, praised Zitumane for the sterling work she had done in the short space of time she had been in charge of the ailing municipality.
"There were a number of candidates earmarked to come to Mthatha, and Zitumane emerged from underneath the pile," said Kwelita.
"Judging by her performance in such a short space of time and by the reports I am getting about her, Zitumane has proved to us that she was the right person at the right time for the job."
