l While Ryan says there are very few direct media strategy and implementation courses in the country, a few places you could start looking are the AAA, Vega and Red and Yellow advertising schools. They offer courses that cover media strategy.
l Johannesburg University offers a Bachelor of Commerce degree with media as one of its modules. Ryan says students will only begin to master the art of strategic thinking from an academic perspective at honours level and experience is what you need to get to the top.
l "The media industry is fast-paced and busy. This means we're often time starved and can't spend too much time training people up in how to think," says Ryan. He says that though some companies offer top-level training, it is up to you to keep up to date with new media and new ways of thinking if you want to make it big.
l He says you should read books such as Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell and Purple Cow by Seth Godin and bury yourself in new experiences so that you can get to know the world around you.
l "If you've never visited a shebeen - do it. Or if you're a woman, try reading men's magazines," he says.
l Open yourself up to experiences that will give you a better understanding of how people from different backgrounds operate so that you can talk to them in a language they understand, Ryan says.
