Better wages

A new minimum wage has been set for farm- workers effective from last Thursday, the Labour Department said on Friday.

A new minimum wage has been set for farm- workers effective from last Thursday, the Labour Department said on Friday.

"They are now entitled to a minimum wage of R1041 a month," department spokesman Zolisa Sigabi said.

She said the yearly wage hikes were regulated by the department's sectoral determination for the agricultural sector. When the sectoral determination was made public in 2001 minimum wages were set at R800 for urban workers and R650 for peri-urban and rural workers, said Sigabi. - Sapa
