Presenters at the Sekgosese community radio station in Limpopo are up in arms after the station failed to pay their salaries for three months.
The 11 presenters downed microphones yesterday and handed over a memorandum of grievances to the station's management.
They accuse the management of malpractices, underpaying them and of not paying their salaries for three months.
Their spokesman, Brutus Pilusa, told Sowetan the rift started when management failed to pay their salaries since November.
"Matters came to a head when information leaked out that members of the management had received their monthly payments of R1200 since December.
"We believe we have made a lot of money for the station on advertisements and deserve payment," said Pilusa.
He said agreement had been reached that every presenter would be paid monthly depending on the amount of money available.
Approached for comment on the claims yesterday, the station's manager, Joel Rabaloi, said the management would "weigh up" the situation.
However, he said the presenters were working on a voluntary basis. The station affords aspirant presenters a chance to hone their skills.
"We're only meant to groom people who want to make it big in the radio industry. We are not creating jobs for the unemployed and those who want to be paid every month should look for jobs elsewhere," Rabaloi said.
