R10m boost for musicians, artists

KwaZulu-Natal musicians and artists stand to benefit from the budget tabled by finance and economic development MEC Zweli Mkhize yesterday.

Yesterday Mkhize announced that he had put aside a whopping R10 million to help and develop musicians and artists.

"Over the years KZN has produced some of the country's greatest musicians and artists.

"However, many of them only reach their full potential after having migrated to other provinces and countries," he said.

Mkhize said this was a loss to the KwaZulu-Natal music and art industry and the KwaZulu- Natal economy, and that it undermined the provincial government's policy to promote the province as a cultural centre and Mecca of the creative arts.

"The funding will promote the local music industry and enable our musicians to achieve their dreams without leaving the province," he said.
