Intelligent, pioneer and legend are some of the words used to define the unique talents of the late veteran stage and television actor Sam Mabhaso Williams.
"Bra Darkie", as he was known in the acting fraternity, died last Tuesday, after a long battle with diabetes.
Born on October 16 1928, in Kwalanga township in Cape Town, Williams was a multi-talented individual who distinguished himself on stage and television.
At a young age his parents moved to Germiston. After completing his matric Williams trained as a teacher at Wilberforce Training College in Evaton, where he developed a love of fine art and formed an a cappella band called the Boston Brothers.
Williams also developed a great passion for acting, which he pursued.
Williams performed in such stage shows as Dinaka, Question, Phiri, Report & Academy, Madie- petsane and Waiting for Godot and acted in television shows including Oh! George, Kwasindezama, Inke- dama, Velaphi, Ikati Elimnyama, Shaka Zulu and Whispered Death.
Williams is survived by his wife Della, 10 children, 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He will be buried tomorrow. The funeral service will be held at the United Apostolic Faith Church, corner Kiepersol and Kremetert streets, Extension 3, Eldorado Park, at 10am. Buses will be waiting at the Central Methodist Church, Johannesburg, at 8am.
