For decades South Africans fought and died while struggling for freedom. In 1994, that freedom was finally attained and this great accomplishment was celebrated around the world.

For decades South Africans fought and died while struggling for freedom. In 1994, that freedom was finally attained and this great accomplishment was celebrated around the world.

However, instead of enjoying freedom in a safe, democratic country, a 65-year-old Daveyton woman was recently brutally raped and murdered in her home. No one in South Africa is free or safe from crime whether they are rich, poor, young or old. Crime in our country is spiraling out of control.

The Gauteng community public safety department's budget for the 2007-08 financial year has been increased by 50percent, with R335million given to the department in the hope of curbing crime. The adjustment is a step in the right direction. It is, however, a little too late for the many who have died or who have been affected by crime.

Crime and poverty are our biggest enemies. If we are to be truly free, our government has to start hearing the cries of the hungry, the pleas of the rape victims and the tears of those who bury their loved ones every day.

I can only hope the Gauteng government is serious about reclaiming our streets from criminals. What is freedom without safety?
