hijacked for his scrap metal

Two men hijacked an 8-ton truck loaded with scrap metal between Bloemfontein and Welkom, Free State police said yesterday.

Two men hijacked an 8-ton truck loaded with scrap metal between Bloemfontein and Welkom, Free State police said yesterday.

The police said the truck was later found without its cargo.

Sergeant Malebo Khosana said the driver of the truck stopped after a vehicle behind him flashed its headlights at him at about 6pm on Tuesday.

"Japie Mkemezulu, 45, decided to stop because he thought the motorist behind him was warning him that there was something wrong with his truck," Khosana said.

Khosana said two armed men jumped out of two cars and overpowered Mkemezulu and a passenger in the truck.

"They tied up Mkemezulu and his passenger, Remaketse Mokheseng, 28, with cable ties, put them in the boot of one of the cars and drove off," said Khosana.

The victims were dropped off at President Brand No 2 Mine. The mine's security guards alerted the police.

Khosana said the truck was found on Wednesday on a farm near Theunissen. - Sapa
