Former member of TKZee, Zwai Bala, appeared in the Johannesburg magistrates' court on tax evasion charges yesterday.

Bala, together with his former band members Tokollo Shabalala and Kabelo Mabalane, allegedly owe the South African Receiver of Revenue about R2357210. They allegedly accumulated this debt between 1999 and 2003 based on the money the group was paid by Sony BMG, the South African Music Rights Organisation and Music South Africa.

Bala is said to owe R805511, Mabalane R886489 and Tshabalala R665209. If the trio is convicted of fraud they could face two years in prison.

Bala yesterday appeared without his co-accused because each member of the group has different legal representatives.

Mabalane and Tshabalala have had their fair share of controversy . Tshabalala was almost extradited to Botswana some years ago to face a culpable homicide charge .

Mabalane is a recovering drug addict.

Bala's next court appearance will be on March 23, while Mabalane will appear on March 26 and Tshabalala on March 28.
