More than 100000 trees will be planted in Mpumalanga to protect the province's environment and control pollution.
Schools and communities have been encouraged to plant grass and trees.
The greening of Mpumalanga was one of five projects announced by Premier Thabang Makwetla when he opened the legislature on Friday.
Other focuses will be on pollution and waste management, environmental awareness and environmental planning.
"The health of any nation lies in the extent to which it is able to maintain a healthy and pristine environment," Makwetla said.
"The environment must be used in a sustainable way for the benefit of future generations."
People will be employed to clean up the areas in which they live.
